The Story — The Cape’s Most Underrated Red Grape
Mourvèdre is one of the world’s great Rhône varieties — planted across the Southern Rhône, Bandol, and increasingly across South Africa’s finest wine regions. In the Cape, it’s still something of an insider’s secret: a grape that demands patience from the vineyard and the winemaker, but rewards both with wines of extraordinary character and depth.
This Mourvèdre from the Botrivier ward in Walker Bay is a genuine rarity — a small-batch, single-variety expression from a producer who has quietly built a following among those who know. We’ve secured an unlabelled parcel at an honest XCellar price. The wine is the same. The label — and the price — is not.
Vintage & Terroir — Botrivier, Walker Bay, 2021
Botrivier sits at the northern end of the Walker Bay appellation, where granite-rich soils and a maritime-influenced climate create ideal conditions for varieties that love warmth and well-drained soils. The 2021 vintage delivered an even, generous ripening season — producing Mourvèdre fruit of excellent concentration, with natural spice and dark fruit character that defines this variety at its best.
In the Cellar
Mourvèdre benefits from careful, unhurried handling. Given time and gentle treatment, it produces wines of exceptional complexity and structure. This expression has been matured with care, building the savoury, earthy character that Mourvèdre lovers seek while preserving the freshness of the fruit. Minimal intervention. Maximum character.
Tasting Notes
Look: Deep ruby-purple with good density — the colour of concentrated, ripe Mourvèdre fruit.
Nose: Juicy red currants and dark bramble fruit open the nose, followed by earthy spice, savoury olive tapenade and a distinct note of black pepper. Complex and inviting.
Palate: Full-bodied with layers of dark fruit and earthy complexity. The tannins are present and firm — structured in the way that makes Mourvèdre so well-suited to ageing — but the fruit is generous and the finish long.
Finish: A quietly bold finish with lingering pepper, dark fruit and that characteristic Mourvèdre savouriness. The kind of red that stays with you long after the glass is empty.
Food Pairing
Mourvèdre loves the South African table. Pair this with grilled lamb chops or a rack of lamb, sirloin steak off the braai, charcuterie and hard cheeses, mushroom risotto, or a rich oxtail or beef stew in winter. The wine’s savoury, earthy character is a natural partner for bold, hearty dishes.
