The Barrel Selection is Vondeling’s premium tier — wines that spend extended time in large-format French oak before a final selection of only the best barrels makes the cut. Grown on the ancient granite soils of Voor-Paardeberg, where the mountain’s heat and cool night air create the conditions for slow, even ripening, these are wines built to be opened deliberately.
What’s in the Case
Barrel Selection Chardonnay 2024 (×2)
From a tiny, tree-lined upper-valley vineyard — whole-bunch pressed and wild-yeast fermented in French oak. Vibrant pear and peach blossom on the nose, with crisp apple, chalky citrus, and crème brülée on a full-bodied, tensioned palate. Rated 91 pts by Tim Atkin.
Barrel Selection Merlot 2022 (×2)
Plush and velvety with dark berries, plum, and gentle French oak spice. A smooth, giving palate with integrated tannin and enough depth to carry a slow-cooked roast or a well-aged cheese board.
Barrel Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 (×2)
Structured and firm with cassis, cedar, and dark chocolate underpinned by Paardeberg granite. A wine that rewards decanting — or a few more years in the cellar.
Six bottles, three varietals, one farm.
