The Producer
Stettyn Family Vineyards is one of the Breede River Valley’s most storied estates, with roots stretching back to 1714 when Governor Chavonnes of the Dutch East India Company granted the original farm to Free Burghers whose ancestors hailed from Stettin in former Prussia. Acquired by the Botha family in 1818, the estate has been lovingly farmed for eight generations. Today, under the guidance of winemaker JM Crafford and CEO Sarel Meyer, 438 hectares of vineyard thrive in the sheltered valley between Villiersdorp and Worcester. The Griffin emblem, borrowed from the coat of arms of Szczecin, stands guard over every bottle.
Vintage & Terroir
The Tobie range is Stettyn’s easy-drinking, everyday collection — wines built for good times rather than cellaring debates. This Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2023 vintage was grown in the warm, sheltered vineyards of the Worcester ward, where deep alluvial soils and generous sunshine coax ripe, generous fruit from the vines. Cool mountain breezes from the surrounding peaks temper the heat, preserving freshness and structure.
In the Cellar
Winemaker JM Crafford aimed for an approachable, fruit-forward Cabernet with this release. The grapes were fermented at controlled temperatures in stainless steel to preserve varietal character, with a short period of skin contact to extract colour and soft tannins without over-extraction. The result is a friendly, easy-going red that doesn’t demand years of patience.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep ruby red with a youthful purple rim.
Nose: Ripe blackcurrant and dark plum lead, with hints of green pepper, dried herbs and a whisper of cedar.
Palate: Medium-bodied and smooth, with juicy blackberry and cassis fruit, soft tannins and a gentle spice note. Well-balanced and immediately drinkable.
Finish: Clean and satisfying, with lingering dark fruit and a touch of mocha.
Food Pairing
A braai essential — throw some boerewors or lamb chops on the coals and pour generously. Equally happy alongside a hearty bobotie, spaghetti bolognese, or a simple burger with mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C.
