The Producer
Stettyn Family Vineyards is one of the Breede River Valley’s most storied estates, with roots stretching back to 1714 when Governor Chavonnes of the Dutch East India Company granted the original farm to Free Burghers whose ancestors hailed from Stettin in former Prussia. Acquired by the Botha family in 1818, the estate has been lovingly farmed for eight generations. Today, under the guidance of winemaker JM Crafford and CEO Sarel Meyer, 438 hectares of vineyard thrive in the sheltered valley between Villiersdorp and Worcester. The original Cape Dutch homestead, dating to 1777, is now a National Monument.
Vintage & Terroir
Old vine Chenin Blanc is the beating heart of South African white wine, and Stettyn’s gnarly bush vines are some of the finest in the Breede River Valley. These low-yielding veterans, their roots plunging deep into the alluvial soils of the Worcester ward, produce intensely concentrated fruit with natural balance. The 2025 growing season delivered warm, even conditions ideal for slow, flavour-building ripeness, while cool mountain breezes preserved bright acidity.
In the Cellar
The grapes were hand-selected from Stettyn’s oldest Chenin Blanc vineyard blocks for maximum complexity. Cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks preserved the vibrant fruit character, while a portion spent time on the fine lees to add weight and textural richness. The result is a wine that honours the old vines’ intensity without masking their natural expression.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Luminous pale gold with a green-tinged shimmer.
Nose: Ripe yellow peach and quince lead, with honeycomb, dried apricot and a subtle waxy note that speaks to the vine age.
Palate: Rich and concentrated yet beautifully poised, with layers of stone fruit, baked apple and a touch of honey, underpinned by a mineral core and lively acidity.
Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering citrus peel and a gentle lanolin texture.
Food Pairing
A natural match for Cape Malay chicken curry, creamy butternut soup, or a simple roast chicken with roasted root vegetables. Try it with a mature Brie or Gruyère for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Serve at 10–12°C.
