The Producer
Stettyn Family Vineyards is one of the Breede River Valley’s most storied estates, with roots stretching back to 1714 when Governor Chavonnes of the Dutch East India Company granted the original farm to Free Burghers whose ancestors hailed from Stettin in former Prussia. Acquired by the Botha family in 1818, the estate has been lovingly farmed for eight generations. Today, under the guidance of winemaker JM Crafford and CEO Sarel Meyer, 438 hectares of vineyard thrive in the sheltered valley between Villiersdorp and Worcester. The original Cape Dutch homestead, dating to 1777, is now a National Monument.
Vintage & Terroir
GWM stands for Grenache Winemaking — a dedication to showcasing this Mediterranean variety through the lens of Worcester terroir. The 2025 vintage benefited from the Breede River Valley’s warm days and cool mountain evenings, allowing the Grenache to develop its characteristic red fruit purity while retaining bright, juicy acidity. The deep alluvial soils and sheltered vineyard sites between Villiersdorp and Worcester provide ideal conditions for this sun-loving variety.
In the Cellar
Winemaker JM Crafford took a sensitive approach with this Grenache Noir, fermenting at moderate temperatures to preserve the grape’s delicate perfume and bright fruit character. Gentle extraction during fermentation ensured supple, approachable tannins, while careful ageing rounded out the wine’s natural spice notes. The aim was to let the variety speak for itself — pure, expressive and thoroughly drinkable.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Bright ruby red with a translucent, garnet-tinged rim typical of Grenache.
Nose: Promising cranberry and ripe blackberry aromas up front, layered with lively spicy-sweet cedar and a hint of dried herbs.
Palate: Medium-bodied with excellent balance — juicy red berry fruit, subtle spice and silky tannins create a wine of real finesse and drinkability.
Finish: Long and juicy, with lingering berry fruit and a savoury, spice-tinged farewell.
Food Pairing
Grenache loves Mediterranean-inspired food — try it with lamb kofte, a tomato-rich pasta bake, or chicken peri-peri with roasted vegetables. Equally at home with charcuterie and Kalamata olives on a warm evening. Serve lightly chilled at 14–16°C for maximum freshness.
