The Producers
This rosé mixed case from South Africa brings six independent estates to one box — Waterkloof, Neil Ellis, Stettyn, Maison, Groenland and Opstal. Between them they span the Schapenberg above False Bay, the windswept coast near Darling, the Breede River Valley, and Bottelary’s sun-baked gravel. Six estates making rosé entirely on their own terms.
Vintage & Terroir
The lineup spans 2023 to 2026 vintages and six distinct Cape terroirs. Waterkloof’s Mourvedre grows dry-farmed on biodynamic gravel slopes above Somerset West. Neil Ellis draws Cinsault from cool coastal Darling vineyards for a dry Provence-style rosé. Stettyn harvests Muscat early from the warm Breede River Valley to preserve its natural perfume. Groenland’s Pinotage Rosé comes from well-drained Bottelary soils. Opstal works Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault in Rawsonville’s Slanghoek Valley. Maison’s 2023 Blanc de Noir is pressed from Shiraz.
In the Cellar
Six approaches, one case. Waterkloof whole-bunch presses in a horizontal basket press and ferments on wild yeasts in wooden vessels. Neil Ellis produces a dry Provence-style Cinsault rosé. Stettyn ferments cool in stainless steel with gentle added carbonation for a fine bead. Opstal uses the Saignée method — bleeding juice from a red ferment early to get structure and palate grip without deep colour. Maison presses Shiraz gently for a coral result.
Tasting Notes
The full spectrum of pink wine. Waterkloof: pale, pomegranate-bright, flinty and mineral. Neil Ellis: salmon-hued, cherry-fruited, with a touch of coastal sea salt. Stettyn Frizzante: sparkling with honeydew, lemon zest and white blossom. Maison Blanc de Noir: soft coral, floral, fresh. Groenland Pinotage Rosé: dry, red-berried, crisply structured. Opstal Blush: more palate presence and tension than its pale blush colour suggests — the case’s surprise package.
