Opstal Sixpence Rosé 2024

Original price was: R600.00.Current price is: R462.00.

The Sixpence Rosé honours Daniel ‘Sixpence’ Smiles — the legendary shepherd who walked Opstal’s land for two decades. Cinsault from his old pastures, gently pressed with a few hours of skin contact and brightened with a splash of Colombard. Cherry and strawberry with crisp acidity and a refreshing finish. Light, fun and unpretentious — exactly the kind of wine the Sixpence name suggests.

The Producer

Opstal Estate has been in the same family since 1847, when JC Rossouw first cultivated this land in the Slanghoek Valley. Seven generations later, winemaker Attie Louw is the one in the cellar — a direct descendant of that founding family, working alongside his father Stanley and brother Zak. The Sixpence range is named in honour of Daniel ‘Sixpence’ Smiles — the legendary shepherd who worked Opstal’s land through the 1950s and ’60s. The vineyards planted on his old pastures now produce these everyday wines, and his son Andries still works on the farm today.

Vintage & Terroir

The 2024 Sixpence Rosé is grown on sandy soil full of river pebbles on the western slopes of the Slanghoek Valley — the same ground where Daniel Smiles once grazed his flock. Because the soil holds little water, the team adds mulch and compost to keep it healthy. The farm sits in the Breedekloof Wine District, between the Slanghoek and Badsberg mountain ranges, with 1,350mm of annual rainfall, mountain breezes and a slow Mediterranean growing season that preserves natural acidity and aromatic freshness in the fruit.

In the Cellar

The Cinsault grapes are gently pressed with only a few hours of skin contact to achieve the wine’s delicate pink colour. A splash of Colombard is added to lift the acidity and brighten the finish. After cold settling, the juice is fermented slowly at low temperatures in stainless steel to preserve freshness and fragrant aromatics. No malolactic fermentation, no oak — the Sixpence winemaking philosophy is direct: make wine that is genuinely enjoyable to drink, without unnecessary complexity.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Vibrant cherry-pink with a clean, bright appearance.
Nose: Bright cherry and strawberry with clean freshness and a gentle floral lift.
Palate: Crisp and fruit-forward with lively acidity. Light-bodied and refreshing, with cherry and red berry flavours carrying through. The Colombard component adds a zippy citrus edge that keeps everything lively.
Finish: Clean, refreshing and easy — a wine that finishes well and leaves you reaching for another glass.

Food Pairing

A natural summer rosé — serve chilled alongside a seafood braai, grilled prawns or a fresh garden salad. Also excellent with sushi, light pasta or a mezze platter. The crisp acidity and bright fruit make it one of the easiest rosés to pair with food. Serve at 8–10 °C.
