THE WINE
Opstal has been farming the Slanghoek Valley since the 1800s — seven generations of one family, vines planted on decomposed granite soils at altitude. Their estate Chenin Blanc draws from two vineyards planted in 1982 and 2006 — the old vines delivering concentration, the younger block bringing freshness.
The 2025 vintage was naturally fermented — 25% in barrels and large French oak Foudres (3 000-litre vessels), the balance in concrete and stainless steel. Six months on the lees in oak builds that creamy, biscuity texture underneath the bright tropical fruit.
TASTING NOTES
Bright pineapple, ripe pear and fresh citrus on the nose, with subtle spice and leesy complexity. The palate is textured and generous — zippy acidity balances the old-oak richness. A Chenin with real personality.
FOOD PAIRING
Creamy pasta, roast chicken with lemon and herbs, bobotie, or aged hard cheeses. Versatile enough for a Tuesday evening or a Saturday braai.
THE DEAL
This is a genuine estate Chenin Blanc from one of the Cape’s oldest family farms, with old-vine depth and natural winemaking craft. Vinty Tribe members get it by the case — direct-sourced, no middleman markup. All flavour, no pretence.
