The Producer
Groenland is a fourth-generation family wine estate nestled in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch. The Steenkamp family has been crafting wines here for over 90 years, with Piet Steenkamp now at the helm as farmer and custodian of the family’s vineyards. The estate comprises 188 hectares, with 152 hectares under vine.
The Steenkamp Ou Bosstok Steen represents the crown jewel of the Groenland range — a tiny-production Chenin Blanc from ancient bush vines, vinified by none other than Danie Steytler of neighbouring Kaapzicht Estate. With just 1,000 bottles produced, this is a rare and deeply personal expression of Bottelary terroir and Steenkamp heritage.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2023 grapes were hand-harvested from a 1.9-hectare block of bush vines planted in 1981 on the slopes of Groenland. These venerable vines, now over 40 years old, are deeply rooted in the Bottelary’s well-drained gravel soils and produce tiny yields of just 3.5 to 4 tonnes per hectare — concentrating intense flavour into every berry. The Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, supplemented by careful irrigation, creates ideal conditions for producing Chenin Blanc of exceptional concentration and complexity.
In the Cellar
Winemaker Danie Steytler of Kaapzicht Estate crafted this wine with the utmost care. The hand-harvested grapes were gently pressed and the juice divided between two 500-litre barrels — one new Hungarian oak and one second-fill French oak. The wine was fermented and matured in barrel for 10 months, developing a rich, creamy texture and beautiful integration of fruit and oak. The total production is a mere 1,000 bottles — a true collector’s piece.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Rich golden yellow with bright highlights.
Nose: Layers of ripe stone fruit — white peach, apricot and nectarine — mingle with honeysuckle, hay and ginger, complemented by vanilla and gentle spice from the oak.
Palate: Rich and mineral-driven, with a creamy, broad texture and moderate acidity. Flavours of stone fruit, honey and toasted almond unfold across the palate, beautifully balanced by a vibrant mineral core.
Finish: Long, smooth and deeply satisfying, with lingering notes of orange blossom and subtle oak spice.
Food Pairing
This opulent Chenin Blanc deserves equally refined partners. Try it with pan-fried crayfish in lemon butter, a creamy chicken and mushroom pie or herb-roasted guinea fowl. It also pairs beautifully with a rich risotto, seared kingklip or a mature Brie. Serve at 12–14°C to fully appreciate the oak integration and textural complexity.
