The Producer
Survivor Wines was born from a remarkable tale — a Nguni cow leapt from a moving truck and landed in the Swartland vineyards of DB Rust. She was named “Survivor,” and her spirit of resilience became the brand’s identity. Today, the wines are crafted by Pierre Wahl — Cape Winemakers Guild member, 2016 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year, and affectionately known as the “Pope of Pinotage.” Pierre’s philosophy is harmony between vineyard and cellar, using minimal intervention to let the terroir speak. Survivor’s Pinotage Reserve 2020 earned a Platter’s 5-star rating, and the range has won Platinum at the SAWi Wine Awards.
Vintage & Terroir
Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s signature white grape, and the Swartland is one of its finest homes. The decomposed granite and Hutton soils, combined with warm days and cool Atlantic-influenced nights, produce Chenin of real concentration and character. The Terroir Range meticulously selects the best vineyard sites for each cultivar, ensuring an authentic expression of place. The 2024 vintage delivered beautifully aromatic, ripe fruit with the natural freshness the Swartland is celebrated for.
In the Cellar
Pierre’s approach to Chenin is restrained and respectful — cool fermentation preserves the grape’s fresh, fruity aromatics, while a portion sees time in oak to add texture and complexity. The result is a Chenin that balances ripe stone fruit with crisp acidity and a subtle creaminess — accessible yet layered.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale straw with golden highlights.
Nose: Ripe stone fruit — peach and apricot — with hints of honeysuckle, quince, and a subtle tropical note.
Palate: Medium-bodied with generous stone fruit and citrus flavours. A gentle creaminess from oak adds texture, while bright, balanced acidity keeps the wine fresh and lively. Refreshing and moreish.
Finish: Clean and lingering, with tangy citrus and a mineral, flinty close.
Food Pairing
Versatile at the table — brilliant alongside grilled crayfish, a creamy chicken and mushroom pie, or a classic Cape Malay bobotie. It also pairs beautifully with roasted butternut soup, a fresh pear and blue cheese salad, or simply on its own as a sundowner. Serve at 8–10°C.
