The Cape Red Blend

The Cape red blend is one of South Africa’s most inventive wine categories — no rulebook, just whatever the vineyard and the winemaker’s instinct call for. This Cape Red Blend Collection gathers six standout expressions of that freedom into a single case, from Rhône-style Syrah blends to a five-varietal Bordeaux blend and one unlabelled insider pour.

What’s in the Box

Six wines, six approaches: Zevenwacht Tin Mine Red 2023 — Trophy Wine Show Best Rhône-Style Red Blend, a Syrah-Mourvèdre blend matured 12 months in French oak. Stettyn Guardian Red Blend 2024 — Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Durif from Worcester’s best-kept secret. Metzer Family Mantra 2021 — 60% Shiraz, 40% Cinsault; black cherries and rose petal. Metzer Kitchen Sink Red Blend 2022 — a Cinsault-led playground blend of ripe red fruit and white pepper. Neil Ellis Short Left Red Blend 2024 — five varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Cinsault, Merlot and Malbec) from Stellenbosch’s pioneering négociant, 14 months in French oak. Vantage Red Blend 2024 — an unlabelled Bordeaux-led blend off the Simonsberg slopes, released under the XCellar Black seal with no estate name on the bottle.

How They’re Made

Cape red blends are fermented variety by variety before the winemaker builds the final house style. Bordeaux-leaning blends lean on Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec for structure; Rhône styles bring Shiraz and Mourvèdre for spice. The Metzer wines take a lighter Cinsault-forward approach, while the Neil Ellis and XCellar Black pours layer multiple Bordeaux-style varieties for depth. Oak maturation across the six ranges from 12 to 18 months in French barrels.

Tasting Notes

Dark cherry, cassis and blackberry run through the structured pours; violets, rose petal and white pepper lift the Cinsault-forward wines. Expect fine tannin, savoury spice and a long finish across the case — bold where it counts, smooth where it matters.

Food Pairing

The Zevenwacht Tin Mine Red pairs with slow-braised lamb or short ribs. Stettyn Guardian handles venison stew or braai boerewors. Metzer Mantra suits braised oxtail; Kitchen Sink loves a charcuterie board. Neil Ellis Short Left is an easy match for braaied lamb chops, and the Vantage Red Blend calls for a rich oxtail potjie or aged cheese board. Order your case and keep the Tribe fed.
