The Producer
Survivor Wines was born from a remarkable tale — a Nguni cow leapt from a moving truck and landed in the Swartland vineyards of DB Rust. She was named “Survivor,” and her spirit of resilience became the brand’s identity. Today, the wines are crafted by Pierre Wahl — Cape Winemakers Guild member, 2016 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year, and affectionately known as the “Pope of Pinotage.” Pinotage lies at the heart of Survivor’s portfolio, and Pierre’s Reserve Pinotage 2020 earned a coveted Platter’s 5-star rating — sharing the podium with icons like Kanonkop Black Label.
Vintage & Terroir
Pinotage thrives in the Swartland’s decomposed granite and Hutton soils, developing the depth, intensity, and refined tannins that have become hallmarks of Survivor’s wines. The warm, dry Swartland climate — tempered by cool Atlantic breezes — allows extended ripening while preserving natural acidity. The 2023 vintage delivered concentrated, aromatic fruit ideal for Pierre’s elegant, terroir-driven style.
In the Cellar
Pierre’s approach to Pinotage balances power with elegance. Gentle extraction during fermentation preserves fruit purity while building structure. Restrained oak use adds complexity without overwhelming the grape’s natural character. The result is a Pinotage that’s modern, refined, and utterly drinkable — a world away from the old-school, heavy-handed styles of the past.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep ruby with a youthful violet rim.
Nose: Dark plum, ripe mulberry, and blackberry with hints of mocha, sweet spice, and a subtle smoky undertone.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with concentrated dark fruit flavours. Refined tannins and balanced acidity give the wine structure and elegance, while gentle oak adds layers of spice and mocha. The characteristic Pinotage earthiness is there, but restrained and polished.
Finish: Long and savoury, with dark fruit, gentle smoke, and a spicy, lingering close.
Food Pairing
A natural braai partner — magnificent alongside boerewors, sticky pork ribs, or a rich beef shin stew. It also pairs beautifully with smoked brisket, a hearty waterblommetjiebredie, or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C.
