The Producer

Stettyn Family Vineyards is one of the Breede River Valley’s most storied estates, with roots stretching back to 1714 when Governor Chavonnes of the Dutch East India Company granted the original farm to Free Burghers whose ancestors hailed from Stettin in former Prussia. Acquired by the Botha family in 1818, the estate has been lovingly farmed for eight generations. Barrel maturation and the serious science of making good Chardonnay has become a key focus for winemaker JM Crafford and the Stettyn team, who cultivate 438 hectares in the sheltered valley between Villiersdorp and Worcester.

Vintage & Terroir

Chardonnay is one of Stettyn’s flagship varieties, and this 2025 release showcases why. The vineyards sit in the Worcester ward, where warm days drive generous fruit ripeness and cool mountain evenings preserve the natural acidity that gives Chardonnay its backbone. Deep alluvial soils with good drainage provide ideal growing conditions, coaxing both concentration and elegance from the grapes.

In the Cellar

After careful whole-bunch pressing, the juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve the bright, primary fruit character. This is a clean, modern style of Chardonnay — focused on varietal purity rather than heavy oak influence — allowing the quality of the fruit and terroir to shine through.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Bright straw yellow with a golden shimmer.

Nose: Ripe citrus and white peach, with hints of melon, subtle butterscotch and a touch of floral blossom.

Palate: Medium-bodied with a creamy texture, delivering ripe stone fruit, citrus and a gentle vanilla note. Well-balanced acidity keeps things fresh and lively.

Finish: Clean and lingering, with a citrus and stone fruit farewell.

Food Pairing

Brilliant with grilled prawns, a creamy chicken pie, or a fresh Caesar salad. Try it alongside a seafood potjie or pan-fried hake with lemon butter. Serve at 10–12°C.
