The Producer

Diemersfontein Wine & Country Estate is a Wellington icon, home to three generations of the Sonnenberg family and birthplace of South Africa’s original Coffee Chocolate Pinotage. But there’s far more to this estate than Pinotage. Nestled in the Wellington wine valley — surrounded by the Hawequa and Groenberg mountains — winemaker Francois Roode crafts a diverse range of award-winning wines across both red and white varieties. The estate holds multiple Michelangelo Gold medals, Platter’s recommendations, and recognition from Tim Atkin MW. Alongside world-class winemaking, Diemersfontein is committed to community upliftment through the Thokozani initiative — where estate employees produce their own wines, celebrating South Africa’s spirit of empowerment and shared success.

Vintage & Terroir

The 2025 vintage in Wellington delivered warm, generous conditions balanced by the region’s signature cool afternoon breezes from False Bay — ideal for Chenin Blanc, which needs warmth for flavour concentration but cool nights to preserve its bright, natural acidity. Diemersfontein’s white wine vineyards benefit from well-drained decomposed granite soils and the estate’s elevated position in the Wellington bowl, where the surrounding mountains channel cool air through the blocks during the evening hours. These conditions produce Chenin Blanc grapes with concentrated tropical and stone fruit flavours and a lively, fresh backbone.

In the Cellar

The Chenin Blanc grapes were harvested in the cool early morning hours to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity. After gentle pressing, the juice was cold-settled and fermented at low temperatures to retain the delicate fruit aromatics and citrus brightness. A portion of the wine spent time on its lees to add textural complexity and a creamy roundness to the palate. The wine was then blended and bottled early to capture its youthful vibrancy and fruit-forward character.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Bright, pale straw with golden highlights.
Nose: Fragrant aromas of ripe guava, yellow peach, and honeydew melon, with a subtle floral lift and hints of pear.
Palate: Juicy and well-rounded, with generous tropical fruit and stone fruit flavours balanced by crisp, refreshing acidity. A touch of creamy lees character adds texture and depth to the mid-palate.
Finish: Clean, fresh and lingering, with a fruity, easy-drinking tail that makes this wine incredibly moreish.

Food Pairing

South Africa’s most versatile white grape at its best — pair with grilled linefish and lemon butter, a creamy chicken and mushroom pie, or a fresh prawn and avo salad. It’s also gorgeous with a butternut and sage risotto or a simple cheese platter with brie and fruit. Serve well chilled at 8–10°C as a sundowner or with any relaxed weeknight meal.
