Most Cape Blends come from the better-known wine valleys of the Western Cape. This one comes from somewhere higher, wilder and more remote: the rugged hills of Piekenierskloof, where ancient bush vines cling to rocky slopes at altitude and produce fruit of remarkable concentration and character.

A Cape Blend is South Africa’s signature red style — Pinotage at its core, supported by classic varieties that add structure and complexity. This one is unlabelled: the producer agreed to let us offer their parcel at a price that reflects the wine, not the label. The result is a proudly South African red at an honest XCellar price.

Vintage & Terroir — Piekenierskloof, 2021

Piekenierskloof sits in the northern reaches of the Western Cape, where high-altitude vineyards — some over 400 metres — enjoy cool nights and long growing seasons. Rocky, red laterite soils force vines to dig deep, concentrating the fruit and producing wines with a distinct earthy, mineral character alongside the region’s characteristic ripeness. Old bush vines, some over 40 years old, contribute intensity that younger vineyards simply cannot replicate.

In the Cellar

The Cape Blend combines old-vine Pinotage with structured Cabernet Sauvignon and a splash of Grenache for fragrance and lift. Careful fermentation and maturation in oak produces a wine that is smooth and fruit-forward without sacrificing structure — generous enough to enjoy now, firm enough to age over the next two to three years.

Tasting Notes

Look: Deep ruby-garnet with good concentration — the colour of ripe Piekenierskloof fruit.

Nose: Plum, black cherry, and a gentle waft of spice lead the nose. There’s a characteristic earthiness from the Pinotage and a hint of sweet oak in support.

Palate: Smooth and fruit-forward with layers of plum and cherry. The tannins are present and firm — this is a wine with the structure to age — but the fruit keeps everything in balance. A satisfying, genuinely South African red.

Finish: Warm and lingering, with spice and dark fruit that fade slowly. Honest and unfussy — exactly what you want from a Cape Blend.

Food Pairing

The Cape Blend was practically designed for South African food. Try it with oxtail potjie, slow-braised lamb shank, pork belly, or a classic boerewors and chops braai. It holds up beautifully against big, hearty flavours — and at this price, you can afford to pour generously.
