Vineyard & Heritage

Grown in the Mediterranean-inspired microclimate of the Breede River Valley, the Alvis Drift vineyards benefit from diverse soils and consistent irrigation, producing wines of exceptional character and complexity. Named after the low-water bridge “Alvi’s Drift,” built by patriarch Albertus Viljoen “Oupa Alvi” Van Der Merwe in 1930, this wine carries the legacy of a family dedicated to winemaking excellence across generations.

In the Cellar

This Cape blend combines Pinotage (36.5%), Cabernet Sauvignon (33%), Shiraz (15%), Durif (7%), Petit Verdot (5%), and Grenache (3.5%). Each variety is vinified separately, using methods like open-tank fermentation, pumping-over, and barrel fermentation. The wine matures for 12 months in French and American oak barrels, approximately 33% new, before careful blending to highlight each variety’s unique character.
