The Story — Swartland’s Wild Child, Unlabelled

Tinta Barocca is not your everyday South African red grape. It’s Portuguese in origin, transplanted to the Cape and increasingly at home in the Swartland’s dry heat and rugged schist soils. Most South Africans know it as a blending variety — the backbone of port, or the supporting cast in a bigger red. Very few see it stand alone like this.

This 2018 vintage is a limited, older release from an anonymous Swartland producer — one who agreed to release a parcel through XCellar on condition we keep their name off the label. Older vintages rarely reach the open market. This one did, and it’s drinking beautifully now with the extra age it’s had to settle and integrate.

Vintage & Terroir — Swartland, 2018

The 2018 vintage in the Swartland was warm and concentrated — producing wines of depth and density that have aged particularly well. The Swartland’s ancient decomposed granite and schist soils, its dry winters and long, warm summers create an environment where Tinta Barocca’s naturally high acid and firm structure are assets, not liabilities. The result is a wine that has evolved beautifully in bottle and now drinks with a soft, integrated character that rewards the wait.

In the Cellar

Gentle handling from grape to glass: fermented slowly in open oak fermenters, basket-pressed to preserve freshness, then matured with minimal intervention to let the variety express itself. This is the kind of low-touch, high-trust winemaking that the best Swartland producers champion — and the wine rewards that faith with character and complexity well beyond its price point.

Tasting Notes

Look: Medium ruby-purple with a clear rim — a wine that has aged gracefully in bottle.

Nose: White pepper, black cherry and baked plum open the nose with inviting warmth. Subtle spice — a little sweet, a little savoury — adds complexity, with a characteristic earthy note that signals Tinta Barocca at its most honest.

Palate: Bright acidity and fine, dry tannins give the wine lift and longevity. The fruit is generous — plum and cherry, with a dried-fruit depth from the 2018 vintage age — and the structure is exceptional for a variety that isn’t always expected to perform solo.

Finish: Long and lingering, with spice and dried plum that fade slowly. An old soul with a twinkle in its eye — exactly as rare as it sounds.

Food Pairing

Tinta Barocca’s structure and acidity make it brilliant alongside bold, rich food. Try it with slow-braised oxtail, lamb shoulder off the bone, pork belly with crackling, or a full-flavoured venison stew. The wine’s earthy character also pairs beautifully with charcuterie boards and aged hard cheeses.
