The Producer
Steel Wines Rosé is made by Jason Steel, a MasterChef South Africa 2013 finalist and former sommelier who worked front-of-house at Cape Town’s Test Kitchen and Foxcroft before turning his hand to winemaking. He works with old-vine parcels in Robertson and makes tiny batches of unpretentious, expressive wine with a chef’s eye for what belongs on the table.
The house rule at Steel Wines is to do things a little differently, and this rosé is a case in point.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2024 comes from aged Shiraz vines in the Robertson Valley, rooted mostly in the region’s “Karoo rooi” soils: fertile, lime-rich blends of alluvial sand, weathered shale and clay with a distinctive iron-rich, rust-red colour. These soils drain well yet hold enough moisture to carry the vines through warm Breede River summers, and they give the fruit a mineral backbone that shows clearly in the glass.
In the Cellar
Jason made the 2024 in the saignée style, a French term that means “bleeding”. Only free-run juice was used, with no hard pressing, so the wine stays free of tannin and grip. It was then fermented and kept in stainless steel for nine months, with no oak at all. The result is a rosé built on bright fruit, energy and clean, precise lines.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Sour cherry, pomegranate and fresh strawberry.
- Palate: A crisp, electric entry with crunchy acidity and stony minerality. Medium-bodied, with juicy red fruit throughout.
- Finish: Dry, clean and mineral.
- Drinking window: Enjoy now or cellar for 3–5 years.
Food Pairing
Built for the table. Pour it with a charcuterie board of mild salami, prosciutto, brie and goat’s cheese, or with grilled prawns, seared scallops or fresh West Coast crayfish. It also works with a classic Niçoise salad, herb-crusted chicken or a Mediterranean-style paella. Order your case and keep the Tribe fed.
