The Shiraz SA Challenge is run by Shiraz SA, the official association of South African Shiraz, and it exists to answer one question each year: which are the country’s best? Judging is deliberately hard to game. Every judge works through their own individual tasting order, no discussion is permitted while tasting, the format was designed in collaboration with Stellenbosch University, and the results are independently audited.

This is the shiraz case South Africa’s Shiraz drinkers actually want: the whole winning line-up, not a selection from it. Twelve estates, one case, no editing by us.

Vintage & Terroir

The twelve run the length of the Cape. Two come off the Cederberg — Cederberg’s own Teen die Hoog and Driehoek, both from the highest vineyards in South Africa, above 1 000 metres on ancient red slate and shale, where the nights are cold enough to hold acid in a hot-climate grape. De Grendel’s Op die Berg Syrah comes off the Ceres Plateau at around 960 metres, in what the estate calls South Africa’s only truly continental climate — vineyards that see snow in winter.

From there it drops to the coast. Groot Phesantekraal sits in Durbanville on a south-facing slope planted in 1998. Spier’s Seaward is not an appellation but a rule — fruit drawn only from vineyards within a set distance of the ocean, across Darling, Durbanville and the Helderberg, which is why it is bottled as Coastal Region rather than any one district. Rust en Vrede’s Estate Vineyards Syrah comes off decomposed granite and sandstone on the slopes of the Helderberg, between 85 and 130 metres. Riebeek Valley Wine Co. works at the foot of the Kasteelberg in the Swartland.

Vintages span 2022 to 2025 — four harvests, not one. That is a feature of a competition case, not a compromise: you are tasting the best available bottling from each estate, whatever year that happens to be.

In the Cellar

The spread of winemaking across these twelve is the real interest of the case, and it is wider than you would expect from a single-varietal line-up.

At one end, Riebeek Valley Wine Co.’s Raar is made by carbonic maceration — whole bunches under a blanket of carbon dioxide so fermentation begins inside the intact berry, the Beaujolais method, then extended skin contact and eight months in older 500-litre barrels. Four barrels made. It is the lightest, most drink-now wine here and it is deliberately odd.

At the other, Driehoek goes into 100% new oak for fifteen months. Fairview’s Cyril Back ferments naturally in open French oak foudres and spends nineteen months in barrel. Rust en Vrede uses 500-litre barrels rather than barriques — 16% new, eighteen months — and vinifies each parcel and clone separately. Stellenbosch Hills splits its new oak between French and American, 15% each, sixteen months. Groot Phesantekraal ferments 20% whole-bunch and matures in 400- and 500-litre barrels, 20% new. De Grendel’s Op die Berg has used no new oak at all — second, third and fourth fill only — which is unusual for a flagship Syrah.

Carbonic maceration to 100% new oak, in one case. There is no house style being imposed here.

Tasting Notes

Across the twelve, four things recur — and they are the reason South African Shiraz reads the way it does.

Pepper, both kinds. White pepper on the cooler, higher sites — Groot Phesantekraal, Op die Berg. Black pepper and liquorice on the warmer ones.

Red fruit and dark fruit as two camps. Raspberry, redcurrant and macerated strawberry on the carbonic and the cooler-climate wines; blackberry, ripe plum, cassis and mulberry on the Helderberg and Paarl end.

Florals. Violets and lily perfume come up repeatedly in the producers’ own notes — Rust en Vrede, Stellenbosch Hills, Driehoek.

Savoury edges. Fynbos, dried herbs, wood smoke, tobacco, cedar, a little cocoa. This is what separates the serious bottles from the merely ripe ones.

Twelve wines across four vintages, from carbonic-light to full-bodied and oak-framed. Pour them side by side and the case argues with itself, which is the point.

Food Pairing

Shiraz is the most obliging red on a South African table, and twelve of them give you room to play.

Put the lighter end — the carbonic Raar, served cool from the fridge — next to boerewors straight off the coals, or a peppery beef sosatie. The mid-weight bottles want lamb: a leg over coals with rosemary and garlic, or a slow shoulder potjie with dried apricot. The big, oak-framed ones — Driehoek, Cyril Back, Rust en Vrede — deserve something with fat and time behind it: short rib, oxtail, or a mature Karoo cheese with a bitter preserve.

And if you are pouring all twelve, keep it simple and let the wines talk: a board of biltong, aged cheddar and dark bread does more for a tasting than a menu does.
