The Producer
Morgenhof Wine Estate traces its roots to 1692, making it one of the oldest farms in the Stellenbosch winelands. Nestled on the fertile slopes of the Simonsberg mountain range, the estate has been shaped by centuries of passionate winemaking. Transformed under the ownership of Anne Cointreau — whose family can trace their roots in fine spirits back to 1210 — Morgenhof earned its official Estate status in 1998, with 74 hectares under vine producing approximately 35,000 cases of quality wine per year. Today, cellarmaster Andries de Klerk and winemaker Emil Kluge craft wines that reflect both the estate’s rich heritage and the exceptional Simonsberg terroir. Their philosophy is simple: quality over quantity — every grape, every process, embodies their dedication to crafting wines that stand apart.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2023 vintage Pinot Gris benefits from Morgenhof’s position on the Simonsberg slopes, one of Stellenbosch’s most celebrated appellations. Pinot Gris — the grey-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir — is still a relative rarity in South Africa, making this a distinctive offering. The Simonsberg mountain provides cool air drainage that tempers the summer heat, while deep, well-drained soils of decomposed granite encourage the delicate Pinot Gris vines to produce small, concentrated berries. The 2023 growing season delivered ideal conditions for this variety, with warm days and cool nights preserving the grape’s natural acidity and aromatic intensity.
In the Cellar
Winemaker Emil Kluge takes a purist approach with this Pinot Gris. The grapes are brought into the cellar in the cool of early morning and loaded whole-bunch into the press. Hyper-oxidation is applied to the juice during pressing — a technique that stabilises colour and enhances aromatic purity. After pressing, the juice is left for 48 hours to settle naturally before being racked to 100% stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation takes place with carefully selected commercial yeast strains at a cool 12–14°C, preserving the grape’s delicate varietal character and natural freshness. No oak is used — this is all about the pure expression of the grape and the Simonsberg terroir.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale straw with a faint blush tinge — a nod to the grape’s pinkish skin.
Nose: Enticing and inviting, with notes of exotic spice, ripe stone fruit — particularly white peach and nectarine — and a subtle floral lift.
Palate: Dry and delicately textured, with remarkable crispness balanced by a gentle opulence. Flavours of luscious white peach and fragrant honeysuckle gracefully unfold, supported by vibrant acidity and a smooth, silky texture.
Finish: Clean, refreshing, and gently lingering, with a delicate stone fruit and spice echo.
Food Pairing
An exceptional partner for spicy Indian cuisine, fragrant Asian dishes, or a light Thai prawn salad. Equally delightful alongside roast chicken, pork tenderloin, or shellfish such as clams, oysters, and mussels. For a lighter pairing, try it with grilled shrimp, ceviche, or a fresh citrus-dressed salad. Serve at 8–10°C.
