The Producer
Groenland Steenkamp Bush Vine Pinotage 2022 is the icon Pinotage from a fourth-generation family wine estate in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch. The Steenkamp family has farmed Groenland for over 90 years, with Piet Steenkamp now at the helm as winemaker and farmer across the estate’s 188 hectares, 152 of which are under vine. The Steenkamp range represents Groenland’s flagship collection — icon wines crafted from the finest parcels on the property, alongside the celebrated Ou Bosstok Steen Chenin Blanc and the Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend. This Bush Vine Pinotage is drawn from a parcel of 20-year-old bush vines, among the oldest plantings on the farm.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2022 vintage grapes were handpicked from low-yielding, 20-year-old Pinotage bush vines on Groenland’s fertile slopes in the Bottelary Hills. The estate’s Mediterranean climate — hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters, with supplementary irrigation when needed — combined with well-drained gravel soils, concentrates flavour in these old, dry-farmed vines and produces fruit of real character and depth.
In the Cellar
Bush vine Pinotage rewards a gentle hand: low yields from these older vines already deliver concentration, so the winemaking leans into structure rather than heavy extraction. The result is a full-bodied red that keeps the variety’s signature spice and fruit purity intact, with the velvety tannins Pinotage is prized for at its best.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep ruby-red.
Nose: Generous mulberry and blackberry fruit with a hint of vanilla.
Palate: Full-bodied, with gentle, lingering spice and velvety tannins.
Finish: Long and rounded, with lingering dark fruit and soft spice.
Food Pairing
This full-bodied Pinotage pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted meats — lamb, beef, duck — as well as hearty stews, boerewors and other braai favourites. It also stands up well to spicier fare like Cape Malay curry, and finishes just as nicely alongside rich chocolate desserts or a charcuterie board. Serve at 16–18°C.
