The Producer
Diemersfontein Wine & Country Estate has been a Wellington landmark for three generations of the Sonnenberg family. Best known as the birthplace of South Africa’s original Coffee Chocolate Pinotage, the estate’s ambitions run far deeper — the Carpe Diem Reserve range represents the pinnacle of Diemersfontein’s winemaking. With vineyards nestled in the bowl formed by the Hawequa and Groenberg mountains, winemaker Francois Roode (since 2003) crafts wines that have earned Michelangelo Gold medals, Tim Atkin MW scores of 91 points, and a place in the Platter’s 2026 “Buy Now, Drink Later” selection. The Carpe Diem Pinotage 2023 is one of those wines — a serious, cellar-worthy expression of South Africa’s signature grape.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2023 vintage in Wellington was characterised by warm, dry conditions that concentrated flavour intensity in the Pinotage berries. The Carpe Diem fruit comes from carefully selected low-yielding vineyard blocks on decomposed granite and clay soils, where the warm Wellington days are tempered by cooling breezes off False Bay in the afternoons. This diurnal temperature variation is key — it preserves acidity and freshness while allowing full phenolic ripeness. The mountain-ringed landscape channels cool air through the vineyards at night, creating ideal conditions for complex, age-worthy reds.
In the Cellar
The Carpe Diem Reserve Pinotage receives the full prestige treatment. Hand-harvested grapes are meticulously sorted, destemmed and cold-soaked to extract maximum colour and flavour complexity. Fermentation takes place in small batches with regular pump-overs to build structure without excessive tannin extraction. The wine then matures in French oak barrels — a proportion of them new — for an extended period, developing layers of spice, cedar and subtle toast that complement rather than mask the fruit character. Francois Roode’s goal is a Pinotage that’s serious and structured but never loses its approachability.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep, inky ruby-red with violet highlights.
Nose: Inviting aromas of ripe raspberries, dark cherries and pencil shavings, with undertones of plum compote and subtle oak spice.
Palate: Rich and concentrated, with layers of dark plum, ripe berries and chocolate, supported by supple, well-integrated tannins. The French oak adds elegance and a cedary complexity that lifts the mid-palate.
Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering berry fruit, fine-grained tannins and a hint of spice on the tail.
Food Pairing
A wine built for the table — pair with roast duck, rich lamb shanks, or a slow-braised beef cheek. It also works beautifully alongside venison, mature cheeses, or a hearty mushroom risotto. For a proudly South African match, try it with a pepper-crusted springbok loin or snoek braai with apricot jam. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for 20–30 minutes to let the layers unfold.
