The Story — Stellenbosch Bordeaux, Unlabelled
There are Stellenbosch Bordeaux-style blends that carry famous labels and sell for R600 or more a bottle. And then there’s this one — the same appellation, the same Cabernet Sauvignon-led approach, the same commitment to quality, but without the name on the bottle. That’s the XCellar deal: estate-quality wine at a price that only makes sense because we cut out the label.
This red comes from a celebrated Stellenbosch producer whose Bordeaux-style blends are among the most sought-after in the Cape. They agreed to sell us an unlabelled parcel at an honest price. We agreed not to say who they are.
Vintage & Terroir — Stellenbosch, 2021
Stellenbosch is South Africa’s spiritual home of Bordeaux varieties. The granite-rich soils of the mountain slopes and the warm, dry Cape Mediterranean climate produce Cabernet Sauvignon of extraordinary depth — wines that age gracefully and reward patience. The 2021 vintage was excellent for reds: well-structured fruit with natural freshness and outstanding cellaring potential.
In the Cellar
Made primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon in the classic Bordeaux tradition, with supporting varieties adding complexity and depth. Extended maceration builds structure and concentration; the wine is then matured in oak to develop the familiar notes of cedar, spice and dark fruit that define this style. Built to cellar, but approachable enough to open tonight.
Tasting Notes
Look: Deep garnet with a ruby edge — the classic colour of a well-made Stellenbosch red.
Nose: Black cherry, plum and cedar unfold immediately, followed by cassis, a dusting of cocoa, and a subtle eucalyptus lift that speaks to the Stellenbosch terroir.
Palate: Layers of dark fruit complemented by creamy oak and fine-grained tannins. Well-structured and elegant, with everything in its right place.
Finish: Long and graceful, with lingering fruit and a beautifully integrated oak signature. A serious Bordeaux-style red from one of South Africa’s great wine regions.
Food Pairing
This wine was made for the South African braai. Serve it alongside grilled beef sirloin, Karoo lamb chops, slow-roasted leg of lamb, or a rich beef potjie. The structured tannins make it an excellent partner for aged cheddar or hard cheeses — and it’s equally suited to cellaring for three to five years, when the oak and fruit will have settled into something truly special.
