The Producer
Alvi’s Drift is a family-owned estate in the Scherpenheuwel ward of Worcester, nestled in the Breede River Valley. Founded in 1928 by patriarch Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, the estate is now run by his grandson Alvi — a medical doctor who returned from abroad to follow his passion. With winemakers Henk Swart and Linley Schultz, and Cape Wine Master Junel van der Merwe, this team is one of the most decorated in the country. Alvi’s Drift holds the NWC Vineyard Consistency Award — ranked South Africa’s number one estate with 62 winning wines over 15 years.
Vintage & Terroir
The Brut Cap Classique is rooted in the ancient limestone soils of the Breede River Valley. The Pinot Noir vineyards are planted on north-facing slopes in black slate soils, delivering grapes of real structure and finesse. The Chardonnay component adds elegance and citrus lift. This unique terroir — combined with the valley’s cool microclimate — produces the ideal base wines for Méthode Cap Classique.
In the Cellar
Crafted using the traditional method (Méthode Cap Classique), the grapes are whole-bunch pressed to create a soft, refined base wine. Following primary fermentation, the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle and is aged on its lees for 24 months before disgorgement. This extended lees contact develops the creamy, biscuity complexity that elevates this Cap Classique beyond its price point.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale gold with a fine, persistent mousse and elegant bead.
Nose: Crisp green apple and subtle brioche notes give way to a bright citrus lift and hints of toasted almond.
Palate: Layered and luxurious, with a creamy texture balanced by vibrant acidity. Flavours of citrus, green apple, and baked biscuit are carried by a refined, persistent mousse. Elegant and celebratory.
Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering citrus and a toasty, biscuity farewell.
Food Pairing
A natural for celebrations, but equally brilliant as an apéritif or alongside fresh oysters, smoked salmon blinis, or sushi. It also pairs beautifully with a creamy seafood risotto or a decadent white chocolate dessert. Serve well chilled at 6–8°C.
