The Producer
Stettyn Family Vineyards is one of the Breede River Valley’s most storied estates, with roots stretching back to 1714. Acquired by the Botha family in 1818, the estate has been lovingly farmed for eight generations. Today, under the guidance of winemaker JM Crafford and CEO Sarel Meyer, 438 hectares of vineyard thrive in the sheltered valley between Villiersdorp and Worcester. The Griffin emblem, borrowed from the coat of arms of Szczecin, stands guard over every bottle.
Vintage & Terroir
Pinotage is South Africa’s own grape — a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut first created in Stellenbosch in 1925. The Breede River Valley’s warm, generous climate is tailor-made for this variety, producing deeply coloured, fruit-forward wines with that distinctive smoky, earthy character. The 2023 vintage delivered ripe, concentrated fruit from Stettyn’s well-established vineyard blocks in the Worcester ward.
In the Cellar
The grapes were fermented at moderate temperatures with regular pump-overs to extract rich colour and round tannins. A period of post-fermentation maceration added depth before the wine was racked off and aged to soften and integrate. Winemaker JM Crafford aimed for a fruit-driven, approachable style that showcases Pinotage at its crowd-pleasing best.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep purple-red with an inky core.
Nose: Ripe mulberry, plum and banana, with smoky undertones, a hint of mocha and sweet spice.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with generous berry fruit, juicy plum and a distinctive smoky-savoury note. Firm but ripe tannins give structure without grip.
Finish: Warm and lingering, with dark fruit, coffee and a touch of sweet spice.
Food Pairing
The quintessential braai wine — brilliant with boerewors, sosaties, or a thick rump steak. Also pairs well with bobotie, a rich oxtail stew, or smoky BBQ ribs. Serve at 16–18°C.
