The Producer
Stettyn Family Vineyards is one of the Breede River Valley’s most storied estates, with roots stretching back to 1714. Acquired by the Botha family in 1818, the estate has been lovingly farmed for eight generations. Today, under the guidance of winemaker JM Crafford and CEO Sarel Meyer, 438 hectares of vineyard thrive in the sheltered valley between Villiersdorp and Worcester. The original Cape Dutch homestead, dating to 1777, is now a National Monument.
Vintage & Terroir
Merlot is one of the most widely planted red varieties in the Breede River Valley, and Stettyn’s warm, sheltered vineyards in the Worcester ward produce fruit with generous ripeness and soft, plush texture. The 2023 vintage delivered excellent conditions for red varieties, with warm days driving flavour development and cool mountain evenings preserving acidity and freshness.
In the Cellar
The grapes were fermented at controlled temperatures with regular pump-overs to extract colour and supple tannins. A period of post-fermentation maceration added weight and complexity before the wine was racked off and aged in tank to preserve its approachable, fruit-forward character. The aim was a smooth, easy-drinking red for everyday enjoyment.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep ruby red with a garnet rim.
Nose: Ripe plum and dark cherry lead, with hints of milk chocolate, dried herbs and a subtle mocha note.
Palate: Medium-bodied with a velvety texture, delivering juicy plum and berry fruit, gentle tannins and a warming spice note. Smooth, rounded and immediately drinkable.
Finish: Soft and satisfying, with lingering dark fruit and a touch of chocolate.
Food Pairing
A versatile food wine — pair it with a classic beef stew, lamb shank potjie, or a mushroom and truffle pizza. Equally happy alongside a braai burger or roast vegetables with rosemary. Serve at 16–18°C.
