The Producer
Stettyn Family Vineyards is one of the Breede River Valley’s most storied estates, with roots stretching back to 1714 when Governor Chavonnes of the Dutch East India Company granted the original farm to Free Burghers whose ancestors hailed from Stettin in former Prussia. Acquired by the Botha family in 1818, the estate has been lovingly farmed for eight generations. Today, under the guidance of winemaker JM Crafford and CEO Sarel Meyer, 438 hectares of vineyard thrive in the sheltered valley between Villiersdorp and Worcester. The original Cape Dutch homestead, dating to 1777, is now a National Monument. The Griffin emblem, borrowed from the coat of arms of Szczecin, stands guard over every bottle.
Vintage & Terroir
The name Bąbelki means “the bubbly” in Polish — a playful nod to Stettyn’s Prussian heritage. This Blanc de Blancs is made exclusively from 100% Chardonnay grown in the cool, elevated blocks of the Worcester ward. The Breede River Valley’s warm days and cool mountain-fed evenings create the perfect balance of ripe fruit and bright acidity that sparkling wine demands.
In the Cellar
The Chardonnay grapes were gently whole-bunch pressed to extract only the purest, most delicate juice. Cool fermentation in stainless steel preserved the vibrant fruit character before the wine was carefully carbonated using the sparged method to create its signature fine, persistent mousse. The result is a crisp, elegant sparkling wine that showcases Chardonnay at its refreshing best.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale gold with a fine, persistent stream of tiny bubbles.
Nose: Yellow apple, honeydew melon and lemon zest with delicate floral notes.
Palate: Crisp and elegant, with fresh apple and citrus flavours carried by lively bubbles and a creamy, mouth-filling texture. Beautifully balanced acidity keeps it vibrant and moreish.
Finish: Clean, refreshing and lingering, with a zesty citrus farewell.
Food Pairing
Pop it as an apéritif or pair with fresh oysters, sushi, smoked salmon blinis, or a light prawn salad. Equally brilliant with a creamy mushroom risotto or mature Brie. Serve well chilled at 6–8°C.
