The Producer
Steel Wines is the passion project of Jason Steel — MasterChef South Africa 2013 finalist, former sommelier and front-of-house star at Cape Town’s celebrated Test Kitchen and Foxcroft restaurants, and now a hands-on boutique winemaker. Jason’s journey from plating dishes to pressing grapes is a testament to his deep love of flavour and storytelling. Working with old-vine parcels in Robertson, he crafts tiny-batch wines that are unpretentious, expressive, and unmistakably personal. His Colombard 2021 scored 91 points from Christian Eedes at Winemag.
Vintage & Terroir
The Red Blend draws on fruit from select Robertson vineyards, where the Breede River Valley’s warm days and cool nights create ideal conditions for balanced, flavour-driven reds. The 2022 vintage was marked by even ripening and excellent fruit concentration, allowing Jason to blend a wine of real depth and drinkability from complementary red varieties.
In the Cellar
Jason’s winemaking philosophy is minimal intervention — letting the vineyards do the talking. The component varieties were vinified separately before being blended and matured in older oak to add subtle seasoning without masking the fruit. The result is a red blend built for pleasure: juicy, layered, and easy to enjoy.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Bright ruby-red with a youthful rim.
Nose: Inviting aromas of ripe plum, dark cherry, and a touch of spice with hints of dried herbs.
Palate: Medium-bodied and juicy, with layers of red and dark fruit, soft tannins, and a gentle savoury undertone. The blend is seamless and moreish — the kind of wine that disappears from the glass without you noticing.
Finish: Smooth and lingering, with soft berry fruit and a whisper of spice.
Food Pairing
A versatile braai companion — equally at home alongside boerewors rolls, a slow-cooked lamb curry, or a mushroom and thyme flatbread. It also pairs well with hard cheeses or a simple pasta bolognese. Serve at 16–18°C.
