The Producer

Steel Wines is the passion project of Jason Steel — MasterChef South Africa 2013 finalist, former sommelier and front-of-house star at Cape Town’s celebrated Test Kitchen and Foxcroft restaurants, and now a hands-on boutique winemaker. Jason’s journey from plating dishes to pressing grapes is a testament to his deep love of flavour and storytelling. Working with old-vine parcels in Robertson, he crafts tiny-batch wines that are unpretentious, expressive, and unmistakably personal.

Vintage & Terroir

Grenache thrives in warm, dry climates, and Robertson’s Breede River Valley provides exactly that — long, sun-drenched days tempered by cool evening breezes from the surrounding mountain ranges. The 2023 vintage delivered beautifully ripe Grenache with the bright red fruit, gentle spice, and supple texture the variety is known for. Jason’s vineyard selection prioritises character over yield, resulting in concentrated, expressive fruit.

In the Cellar

Jason takes a hands-off approach with his Grenache, using gentle extraction to preserve the grape’s delicate aromatics and silky mouthfeel. The wine sees time in older oak to add subtle complexity without masking the pure fruit expression. It’s a wine that showcases Grenache at its most charming — generous, perfumed, and utterly approachable.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Medium ruby with a garnet edge — typical Grenache translucency.

Nose: Ripe raspberry, red cherry, and dried rose petal with hints of warm spice and garrigue.

Palate: Medium-bodied with generous, supple red fruit. Soft, rounded tannins and a gentle warmth carry flavours of strawberry, cherry, and a touch of white pepper. The texture is silky and inviting.

Finish: Warm and lingering, with sweet spice and a savoury, herbal close.

Food Pairing

Grenache’s generous fruit and gentle spice make it a brilliant match for slow-roasted lamb shoulder, a Moroccan-spiced tagine, or a hearty ratatouille. It’s also lovely alongside a cheese board with semi-hard varieties like Gruyère or Manchego. Serve at 15–17°C.
