The Story: Summer-Ready Grenache
Part of the Lekker Labels collection, the Steel Wines Grenache 2023 is Jason Steel’s slightly more structured “older brother” to his Cinsault. Sourced from a tucked-away pocket of vines between Ashton and Swellendam, this Grenache balances lightness and poise — perfect slightly chilled by the pool or as a seamless transition between white and red at the table.
Vineyards & Terroir
Grown on sandstone- and clay-based soils with touches of granite and quartz, the fruit captures both brightness and subtle mineral depth. The vines deliver a delicate fruit purity that shows beautifully in the glass.
In the Cellar
Grapes were crushed and destemmed, with a portion undergoing carbonic maceration to preserve bright fruit notes. Juice was pressed and racked into old 225-litre French oak barrels for natural fermentation and 12 months’ maturation. Light filtration and gentle fining preceded bottling to keep the wine fresh and expressive.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Pale ruby with a luminous rim.
- Nose: Delicious cherry, plum and sweet berry aromas with a hint of pithy, savoury spice.
- Palate: Light-to-medium bodied with gentle tannins, subtle earthiness and pleasing palate weight from barrel ageing.
- Finish: Dry, pithy and clean—perfect slightly chilled.
Food Pairing
Pairs beautifully with quail, lean pork cuts, seafood paella or a rich mushroom risotto. Serve slightly chilled (14–16°C) to highlight its fresh, bright character.
