The Story: From Workhorse to Darkhorse
Part of the Lekker Labels, the Steel Wines Colombard 2022 transforms a historically “bulk or blended” varietal into a refined, small-batch wine. Barrel fermented and aged, it showcases ripe citrus, stone fruit, and subtle earthiness — proving that even a “workhorse” grape can become a true darkhorse.
Vineyards & Terroir
Sourced from a parcel of Colombard in the Robertson Valley, planted in 1987. The vineyard sits slightly elevated above the Breede River on “Karoo Rooi,” limestone, and shale soils. These conditions give the fruit concentrated flavours, balanced acidity, and a unique expression of the region.
In the Cellar
Grapes are crushed and destemmed, then pressed and racked into old 500-litre French oak barrels. Naturally fermented and aged for 12 months, the wine develops both weight and texture. Light filtering before bottling ensures purity and elegance.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Pale straw with hints of gold.
- Nose: Sweet-sour notes of ripe peach, tropical fruit, citrus, and subtle earthy undertones.
- Palate: Medium-bodied with beautiful weight from barrel ageing, balanced by refreshing natural acidity.
- Finish: Clean, elegant, and lingering with citrus and stone fruit character.
Food Pairing
Pairs perfectly with fresh white fish ceviche, Cape Malay mussels, or Thai-style seafood curry. Its bright acidity and textured palate make it versatile for many seafood or lightly spiced dishes.
