The Producer
Opstal Estate has been in the same family since 1847, when JC Rossouw first cultivated this land in the Slanghoek Valley. Seven generations later, winemaker Attie Louw is the one in the cellar — a direct descendant of that founding family, working alongside his father Stanley and brother Zak. The Sixpence range is named in honour of Daniel ‘Sixpence’ Smiles — the legendary shepherd who worked Opstal’s land through the 1950s and ’60s. The vineyards planted on his old pastures now produce these everyday wines, and his son Andries still works on the farm today.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2024 Sixpence White Blend is grown in the Slanghoek Valley, Breedekloof Wine District, at the foot of the Slanghoek and Badsberg mountain ranges. One hundred hectares of vines across soils that change completely within metres — from rich clay on the eastern slopes to sandy and stony ground on the west. The Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon for this blend benefit from 1,350mm of annual rainfall, mountain breezes and a slow Mediterranean growing season that preserves natural acidity and aromatic freshness.
In the Cellar
Grapes are harvested early in the morning to retain natural acidity and preserve aromatic freshness in the heat of the Slanghoek growing season. The Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks at cold temperatures, with no malolactic fermentation — keeping the natural acidity fresh and vibrant. After fermentation, the two varieties are blended at 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sémillon to achieve the optimal balance of freshness, body and fruit complexity. Bottled early to preserve the vibrant citrus and floral aromatics that define this wine.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale straw with bright, clean highlights and a crisp, youthful appearance.
Nose: An abundance of citrus — lime, lemon and grapefruit — with white flowers and a gentle undertone of passion fruit and melon. Clean, fresh and immediately appealing.
Palate: Vibrant and fruit-forward on entry, with citrus and floral aromatics lifted by lively acidity. The Sémillon adds a welcome roundness and body on the mid-palate, with white peach and tropical fruit contributing depth.
Finish: Clean, fresh and well-rounded with lingering citrus and a smooth, food-friendly close.
Food Pairing
Excellent with grilled chicken, a simple pasta salad or fresh linefish. A natural match for takeaway sushi, light seafood or a vibrant summer salad. The freshness and acidity work beautifully as an aperitif, while the roundness from the Sémillon carries it comfortably through a full light meal. Serve at 8–10 °C.
