The Producer
Neil Ellis is rightly called the mentor of South African wine. What started in the early 1980s as a one-man operation — Neil scouting vineyards across the Cape to find the best fruit — has grown into a family estate with a global reputation for elegance, quality and value for money. Son Warren now makes the wines (Cape Winemakers Guild member since 2017), carrying forward a philosophy that’s never changed: great wine starts in the vineyard. The estate’s Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon rank among the finest in the country, backed by 5 Platter’s stars (four times for the Jonkershoek Cab), consistent 90+ Tim Atkin ratings, and acclaim from James Suckling, Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.
Vintage & Terroir
Bush vines grown on the rolling hills of Groenekloof farm near Darling yield the distinctive fruit used to make this Sauvignon Blanc. The terroir here is shaped by the Benguela Current — that cold Atlantic conveyor belt that hugs the West Coast, sending cool breezes and a moody morning mist rolling across the vineyards. This maritime influence leaves the most delicate imprint of salinity on the grapes and slows ripening to a crawl, building layer upon layer of flavour while keeping alcohol naturally moderate. The 2025 vintage is a pure expression of this cool West Coast terroir — bright, fragrant and utterly refreshing. Wine Enthusiast described the 2024 as having “a lively mix of floral and grapefruit aromas” — and the 2025 continues this trajectory of crisp, elegant winemaking.
In the Cellar
After a careful selection process, the grapes are crushed and the juice is fermented with neutral yeasts at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks, preserving every bit of aromatic intensity and freshness. The wine spends extended time on its fine lees to build texture and viscosity — adding a creamy mid-palate that lifts this above your average entry-level Sauvignon Blanc. The result is a wine that drinks beautifully while young yet has the structure to develop. This is not a throwaway quaffer — it’s serious winemaking at an accessible price point.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw with green hues — classic cool-climate Sauvignon. The nose is immediately inviting: exotic fruit, fresh herbs, pink grapefruit, lime zest and a distinctive mineral freshness that speaks of its coastal origins. The palate is dry and elegant, with crisp acidity driving flavours of green apple, passion fruit and citrus across a long, clean finish. There’s a lovely textural quality here too — the extended lees contact gives a subtle creaminess that rounds out the bright acidity. This is the kind of wine that makes you wonder why you’d ever spend more on a Sauvignon Blanc. Top South African value for money — and it comes in a bottle that won Gold at the Wine Label Design Awards, a Grand Prix, and a FINAT International Label Competition Judges Award.
Food Pairing
Born for the braai — spectacular with fresh fish or shellfish straight off the coals, snoek on the fire, or a simple grilled linefish with lemon. The bright acidity and ripe fruit also complement crunchy summer salads, cheese and vegetable dishes, spicy Thai green curry, or sushi. Perfect as an aperitif on a warm afternoon, or alongside a platter of goat’s cheese and fresh figs. Serve well chilled at 8-10 C and enjoy within 18 months of vintage for peak freshness.
