The Producer
Morgenhof Wine Estate traces its roots to 1692, making it one of the oldest farms in the Stellenbosch winelands. Nestled on the fertile slopes of the Simonsberg mountain range, the estate has been shaped by centuries of passionate winemaking. Transformed under the ownership of Anne Cointreau — whose family can trace their roots in fine spirits back to 1210 — Morgenhof earned its official Estate status in 1998, with 74 hectares under vine producing approximately 35,000 cases of quality wine per year. Today, cellarmaster Andries de Klerk and winemaker Emil Kluge craft wines that reflect both the estate’s rich heritage and the exceptional Simonsberg terroir. Their philosophy is simple: quality over quantity — every grape, every process, embodies their dedication to crafting wines that stand apart.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2023 vintage Viognier benefits from Morgenhof’s enviable position on the Simonsberg slopes, one of Stellenbosch’s most celebrated appellations. The mountain provides cool air drainage that tempers summer heat, while deep, well-drained soils of decomposed granite and shale contribute mineral complexity and encourage the vine roots to dig deep. Viognier is a variety that loves warmth but needs just enough cool influence to retain its aromatic intensity — the Simonsberg microclimate delivers precisely this balance, resulting in grapes of exceptional flavour concentration with enough natural acidity to maintain elegance.
In the Cellar
Winemaker Emil Kluge treats this expressive variety with care, preserving its naturally opulent aromatics while building complexity and texture. The grapes are gently pressed and cool-fermented to capture the full spectrum of floral and stone fruit character. A portion of the wine sees subtle oak integration — enough to add layers of honeysuckle, spice, and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel, without masking the varietal’s inherent charm. The result is a Viognier of real presence — rich yet refined, aromatic yet structured.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Luminous pale gold with warm straw highlights.
Nose: Expressive and mouth-watering — enticing floral aromatics lead, with vibrant notes of ripe peach, apricot, and a whisper of spice. The subtle oak integration adds elegant hints of honeysuckle and toasted almond.
Palate: Rich and smooth, with generous stone fruit flavours, floral notes, and a luscious mid-palate weight. Despite its opulence, a refreshing acidity provides balance and keeps the wine lively and food-friendly.
Finish: Smooth and lingering, with peach blossom and a gentle spice trail.
Food Pairing
A beautifully versatile white that pairs handsomely with creamy curries, roasted chicken with apricot glaze, grilled linefish with a citrus butter sauce, or a rich seafood risotto. Equally delightful alongside a semi-soft cheese board or a fragrant vegetable tagine. Serve at 10–12°C.
