The Producer

Morgenhof Wine Estate traces its roots to 1692, making it one of the oldest farms in the Stellenbosch winelands. Nestled on the fertile slopes of the Simonsberg mountain range, the estate has been shaped by centuries of passionate winemaking. In the modern era, Morgenhof was transformed under the ownership of Anne Cointreau — yes, that Cointreau — whose family can trace their roots in fine spirits back to 1210. The estate earned its official Estate status in 1998, with 74 hectares under vine producing approximately 35,000 cases of quality wine per year. Today, cellarmaster Andries de Klerk (since 2012) and winemaker Emil Kluge (since 2022) craft wines that reflect both the estate’s rich heritage and the exceptional Simonsberg terroir. Morgenhof’s philosophy is quality over quantity — every grape, every process, embodies their dedication to crafting wines that stand out.

Vintage & Terroir

The 2023 vintage Gewürztraminer benefits from Morgenhof’s privileged position on the Simonsberg slopes, one of Stellenbosch’s most celebrated appellations. The Simonsberg mountain provides a dramatic backdrop and a unique microclimate — cool air drainage from the mountain slopes moderates summer temperatures, while the deep, well-drained soils of decomposed granite and shale provide excellent drainage and mineral complexity. Gewürztraminer is a notoriously temperamental variety that thrives in cooler sites, and Morgenhof’s elevation and aspect provide just the right conditions for this aromatic grape to develop its full, exotic character while retaining balancing acidity.

In the Cellar

Winemaker Emil Kluge handles this aromatic variety with a delicate touch, aiming to preserve the grape’s naturally intense perfume while building palate weight and texture. The grapes are gently pressed and cool-fermented to retain the varietal’s hallmark floral and spice aromatics. A portion sees brief oak contact to add subtle complexity and a smooth, rounded mouthfeel without masking the wine’s expressive fruit character. The result is a Gewürztraminer of real poise — full-bodied yet elegant, aromatic yet structured.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Pale straw-gold with a faint copper tinge.
Nose: Immediately captivating — delightful fragrances of freshly bloomed rose petals and Turkish delight, complemented by subtle hints of lychee, ripe stone fruit, and exotic spice.
Palate: Full-bodied and richly textured, with enchanting flavours of ginger spice taking centre stage, supported by lychee, rose water, and a thread of honeyed sweetness. Despite its generous weight, a bright acidity keeps everything balanced and fresh.
Finish: Lingering and elegant, with an exotic spice and floral trail that invites the next sip.

Food Pairing

A natural partner for aromatic, spice-driven cuisine — think Cape Malay bobotie, Thai green curry, or fragrant Moroccan tagine. Equally stunning alongside pan-seared duck breast with a plum reduction, mature blue cheese, or a simple charcuterie board with Asian pickles. Serve well chilled at 8–10°C.
