Vintage & Terroir

The 2023 vintage delivered warm, dry conditions ideal for Pinotage — South Africa’s signature red grape. The fruit for this wine comes from carefully selected vineyard blocks in the Western Cape, where warm days and cool maritime-influenced evenings create the perfect conditions for slow, even ripening. Low-yielding vines on well-drained soils produce small, intensely flavoured berries with deep colour and concentrated flavour — the building blocks of great Pinotage. The maritime influence adds a freshness and lift that keeps the wine vibrant and drinkable.

In the Cellar

The grapes were hand-sorted and destemmed before a carefully controlled fermentation to preserve the bright fruit character that defines Maasbaai Pinotage. Gentle extraction techniques coaxed colour and flavour from the skins without over-extracting harsh tannins. A portion of the wine spent time in oak to add subtle spice and structure, while the majority was aged in stainless steel to maintain fruit purity. The final blend strikes a perfect balance between the juicy, crowd-pleasing nature of easy-drinking Pinotage and the depth and complexity that make you want to pour another glass.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep ruby-red with a vibrant, youthful core.
Nose: Expressive aromas of dark cherry, ripe plum and mocha, with hints of soft spice and a subtle smoky undertone.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with generous dark fruit flavours, juicy acidity and smooth, supple tannins. The mocha and spice notes add complexity, while the fruit-forward character keeps things accessible and moreish.
Finish: Warm and satisfying, with lingering dark cherry and a gentle spice kick on the tail.

Food Pairing

A braai essential — stunning with sticky lamb ribs, a flame-grilled burger, or a generous helping of bobotie. It also pairs beautifully with pizza, a rich tomato-based pasta, or a mature cheddar and biltong board. For something coastal, try it with a West Coast potjie or smoked snoek pâté. Serve at 14–16°C.
