Vintage & Terroir

The 2023 Cape Reserve Red Blend draws fruit from carefully selected vineyard blocks across the Western Cape — blending the best of what South Africa’s diverse terroir has to offer. Warm, dry conditions during the 2023 vintage concentrated flavour and colour in the red grape varieties, while the maritime influence of the Cape’s coastal geography added a freshness and aromatic lift to the fruit. The blend brings together complementary varieties, each contributing a different dimension — structure, fruit generosity, spice and complexity — to create a wine greater than the sum of its parts.

In the Cellar

Each component of the Cape Reserve Red Blend was vinified separately, allowing the winemaker to extract the best qualities from each variety. After destemming and a moderate fermentation with regular pump-overs, the individual components were matured — a portion in oak barrels for added structure and spice, the remainder in stainless steel for fruit preservation. The final blend was carefully assembled to achieve balance, depth and drinkability. This is a wine that’s generous and approachable from the first pour, but with enough complexity to reward closer attention.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep garnet-red with a bright ruby rim.
Nose: Rich aromas of dark berries, ripe plum and blackcurrant, layered with hints of spice, cedar and a touch of dark chocolate.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with generous dark fruit flavours, well-integrated tannins and a savoury, spicy mid-palate. The blend delivers real depth and complexity while remaining smooth and immediately drinkable.
Finish: Long and warming, with lingering dark fruit, gentle spice and a satisfying, smooth tail.

Food Pairing

A versatile red built for South African tables — pair with a flame-grilled rump steak, slow-cooked lamb shanks, or a rich beef and mushroom pie. It’s also brilliant alongside a hearty potjiekos, boerewors off the braai, or a mature cheese and charcuterie board. For a coastal twist, try it with grilled crayfish or a West Coast waterblommetjie bredie. Serve at 16–18°C.
