The Producer
Lautus launched South Africa’s first non-alcoholic wine in 2017 and has been leading the de-alcoholised wine revolution ever since. Founded by winemaker Reg Holder — a Stellenbosch University-trained viticulturist who honed his craft at Neil Ellis Wines and Delheim — Lautus brings serious winemaking credentials to the alcohol-free category. Based in Stellenbosch, Lautus combines traditional winemaking with advanced spinning cone technology to gently remove the alcohol while preserving the complexity and finesse of premium wine. The inspiration was personal: Reg’s wife wanted a genuine wine experience during pregnancy, and that quest became a full-time passion that has since transformed the SA non-alcoholic wine landscape.
Vintage & Terroir
The grapes for this sparkling rosé are sourced from premium Western Cape vineyards, selected for their bright fruit character and natural acidity. Lautus begins with real wine, crafted from carefully grown grapes in optimal terroir before the de-alcoholisation process. The cool-climate vineyard sites contribute the fresh berry and floral aromatics, while the Cape’s generous sunshine develops the ripe, generous fruit flavours that give this rosé its charm. The terroir expression carries through the spinning cone process, ensuring a wine that tastes like wine, not a soft drink.
In the Cellar
The grapes are vinified as a conventional rosé wine with brief skin contact to extract the beautiful salmon-pink colour and delicate berry fruit character. After fermentation, the wine is passed twice through a spinning cone column at low temperatures — first to capture and preserve the precious aromas and flavours, then to gently remove the alcohol. The result is a de-alcoholised rosé that retains varietal character, balance and finesse. Natural carbonation adds a lively, celebratory effervescence. All the sparkle, none of the regret.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Delicate salmon-pink with a fine, persistent mousse and elegant bubbles.
Nose: Fresh and inviting aromas of strawberry, raspberry and watermelon, with hints of rose petal and citrus blossom.
Palate: Light and refreshing, with juicy red berry and citrus flavours, a delicate sweetness balanced by bright acidity, and a fine, creamy mousse. Elegant, fun and utterly drinkable.
Finish: Clean and uplifting, with lingering berry fruit and a refreshing citrus tail.
Food Pairing
The perfect partner for celebrations, baby showers, brunches and any occasion that calls for bubbles without the alcohol. Pair with fresh strawberries, a light prawn cocktail, or a Mediterranean mezze platter. It’s also lovely with sushi, a goat’s cheese salad, or simply on its own as a guilt-free sundowner. Serve well chilled at 6–8°C.
