The Producer
Lautus — Latin for pure, elegant, and sumptuous — was born in 2017 when founder and oenologist Reg Holder set out to create South Africa’s first genuine de-alcoholised wine. With a BSc in Agriculture from Stellenbosch University and over a decade of winemaking experience at celebrated estates including Neil Ellis Wines and Delheim, Reg had the credentials to pull it off. The inspiration? His wife’s pregnancy and the desire for a wine that delivered the real thing — complexity, depth, and pleasure — without the alcohol.
Vintage & Terroir
The grapes for this rosé are sourced from vineyards in Voor Paardeberg, Western Cape — a region prized for its granite-rich soils and warm Mediterranean climate. Pinotage and Moscato are the starring varieties: the Pinotage delivers structure and berry-driven fruit character, while the Moscato adds delicate floral lift and natural aromatic intensity. The combination of warm days and cool evening breezes ensures bright acidity and concentrated flavour in the grapes.
In the Cellar
The wine is made using traditional rosé techniques, with limited skin contact to extract the beautiful salmon-pink hue and fresh berry character. After fermentation and a period of settling, the wine passes twice through Lautus’s proprietary spinning cone technology at low temperatures: the first pass captures and preserves the wine’s delicate aromas and flavours, while the second gently removes the alcohol. The result is a de-alcoholised rosé that retains genuine wine complexity at less than 0.5% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale salmon-pink with bright, youthful clarity.
Nose: Pure aromas of strawberry and red berry fruit with delicate floral notes from the Moscato component.
Palate: Vibrant summer berries — strawberry, raspberry, and a medley of red fruits — with a hint of sweetness balanced by refreshing acidity. Drier than most de-alcoholised rosés on the market.
Finish: Clean and refreshing, with lingering berry fruit and a crisp, moreish farewell.
Food Pairing
This versatile rosé is perfect alongside a summery prawn salad, seared tuna, or a light chicken Caesar. It also shines with sushi, charcuterie boards, or simply on its own as an afternoon sipper. Serve well chilled at 6–8°C for the freshest expression.
