The Producer
Jason’s Hill Private Cellar is a family-run gem nestled at the foot of the Slanghoek Mountain in the Breedekloof wine valley. The Du Toit family has been farming this land since 1844, and in 2002, winemaker Ivy du Toit established the cellar and began crafting her own wines. Her talent was immediately recognised — she became the first woman to win the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year award in 2003 and was named Landbou Weekblad Woman Winemaker of the Year in 2004. The Jacobs Creek Classic Red is Jason’s Hill’s easy-drinking everyday red — named in the tradition of the estate’s family heritage and crafted to deliver maximum enjoyment at an accessible price point.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2021 vintage in the Slanghoek Valley produced richly flavoured red grapes thanks to warm, dry summer conditions moderated by the cooling influence of the surrounding mountains. The Breedekloof region is one of South Africa’s most fertile wine-growing areas, blessed with deep alluvial soils, abundant sunshine and a Mediterranean climate perfectly suited to red grape varieties. The Slanghoek Mountains — towering to over 1,500 metres — channel cool air through the valley at night, preserving freshness and acidity in the fruit. These conditions produce grapes with excellent colour, generous fruit expression and soft, approachable tannins.
In the Cellar
Ivy du Toit crafts the Jacobs Creek Classic Red for immediate enjoyment — a fruit-forward, easy-drinking blend that doesn’t require any fuss or ceremony. The grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness, destemmed and fermented at moderate temperatures to preserve bright fruit flavours. Gentle extraction techniques ensured soft, supple tannins and a smooth mouthfeel. A short period of maturation rounded out the wine before bottling, resulting in a red that’s ready to enjoy from the moment you pop the cork — no decanting required.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Medium ruby-red with a bright, youthful hue.
Nose: Inviting aromas of ripe plum, red berries and a hint of spice, with subtle earthy undertones adding complexity.
Palate: Medium-bodied and smooth, with juicy red and dark fruit flavours, soft tannins and a gentle spiciness. The wine is well-balanced and immediately drinkable — no sharp edges, just pure fruit pleasure.
Finish: Clean and smooth, with a fruity, easy-going tail that makes this wine dangerously moreish.
Food Pairing
The ultimate braai wine — brilliant alongside boerewors rolls, lamb chops or a simple chicken sosatie. It’s also a winner with pizza, pasta bolognese, or a hearty tomato-based stew. For a casual weeknight meal, try it with a cheese and charcuterie board or a rich mushroom burger. Serve at 14–16°C — no need to decant, just pour and enjoy.
