The Producer

Jason’s Hill Private Cellar sits at the foot of the Slanghoek Mountain in the heart of the Breedekloof wine valley — one of South Africa’s most scenic and underrated wine regions. The Du Toit family has been farming this land since 1844, and in 2002, winemaker Ivy du Toit built the cellar and began crafting wines under her own label. What followed was remarkable: Ivy became the first woman to win the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year award in 2003, and was named Landbou Weekblad Woman Winemaker of the Year in 2004 — firsts that announced a serious new talent on the South African wine scene. Today, Jason’s Hill produces a focused range of award-winning reds and whites that punch well above their weight, drawing fruit from old vineyards in the fertile Slanghoek Valley.

Vintage & Terroir

The 2021 vintage in the Slanghoek Valley delivered excellent conditions for red wine — warm, dry summer days with cool mountain air flowing through the valley at night, preserving acidity and extending the ripening period. The Izaks Reserve draws its fruit from carefully selected vineyard blocks on the valley floor and lower mountain slopes, where deep, fertile soils and a Mediterranean climate produce grapes of remarkable concentration and complexity. The surrounding Slanghoek Mountains — reaching over 1,500 metres — create a dramatic natural amphitheatre that moderates temperatures and channels cooling breezes through the vineyards.

In the Cellar

The Izaks Reserve is Ivy du Toit’s flagship red — a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, each variety vinified separately for maximum expression. After careful sorting and destemming, each component was fermented in small batches with regular pump-overs to build structure and colour. The wine then matured in French oak barrels for an extended period, developing layers of cedar, vanilla and spice that integrate seamlessly with the concentrated fruit. The final blend was assembled to achieve the Izaks Reserve’s hallmark combination of power, elegance and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep, opaque garnet with a bright ruby rim.
Nose: Rich and inviting aromas of dark cherry, ripe berries and plum compote, layered with cedar, dark chocolate and subtle vanilla from French oak ageing.
Palate: Full-bodied and generously flavoured, with concentrated cherry and berry fruit, firm but well-integrated tannins, and a spicy, savoury mid-palate. The Petit Verdot adds colour and structure, while the Malbec and Merlot contribute fleshy roundness.
Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering dark fruit, fine-grained tannins and a touch of oak spice.

Food Pairing

A wine built for the table — pair with a perfectly grilled fillet steak, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, or a rich oxtail potjie. It also shines alongside venison, mature cheddar, or a hearty beef bourguignon. For a South African classic, try it with a biltong and dried fruit platter or sosaties off the braai. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for 30 minutes to let the layers unfold.
