The Producer
Groenland is a fourth-generation family wine estate nestled in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch. The Steenkamp family has been crafting wines here for over 90 years, with Piet Steenkamp now at the helm as winemaker and farmer. The estate comprises 188 hectares, with 152 hectares under vine.
The Steenkamp range represents the pinnacle of Groenland’s winemaking — their icon wines, crafted from the finest parcels on the estate. This Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend sits alongside the celebrated Ou Bosstok Steen and the Antoinette Marie as part of Groenland’s flagship collection. The estate’s wines have earned multiple accolades at the Veritas, Michelangelo and Gourmet Festival awards.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2019 vintage in Stellenbosch delivered a classic growing season for Bordeaux varietals, with moderate temperatures and well-timed rainfall producing grapes of exceptional concentration and balance. Groenland’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vineyards are planted on elevated south-west facing slopes in the Bottelary Hills, overlooking Table Bay. The well-drained gravel soils and Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for these varieties, while the cooling maritime breezes ensure slow, even ripening and excellent flavour development.
In the Cellar
This Bordeaux-style blend marries the structure and blackcurrant intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon with the plush, velvety softness of Merlot. The grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and each variety was vinified separately before blending. Fermentation was temperature-controlled to preserve aromatic complexity, followed by maturation in French oak barrels that add layers of cedar, vanilla and spice to the concentrated fruit core.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep garnet-red with ruby highlights.
Nose: Elegant aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and dark cherry, layered with cedar, vanilla and subtle hints of tobacco and dark chocolate from French oak maturation.
Palate: Full-bodied yet refined, with concentrated dark berry fruit, cassis and a touch of graphite. The Merlot contributes a plush, smooth mid-palate, while the Cabernet provides firm structure and savoury complexity.
Finish: Long and elegant, with fine-grained tannins and lingering notes of cedar, dark chocolate and ripe berry fruit.
Food Pairing
This Bordeaux-style blend is a superb match for a perfectly grilled fillet steak, herb-crusted rack of lamb or a rich beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with aged Gouda, a classic coq au vin or a hearty venison casserole. Serve at 16–18°C and enjoy within 5–10 years for optimal drinking.
