The Producer
Groenland is a fourth-generation family wine estate nestled in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, one of the Cape’s most prized red wine districts. The Steenkamp family has been crafting wines here for over 90 years, with Piet Steenkamp now at the helm as winemaker and farmer. The estate comprises 188 hectares, with 152 hectares under vine — including an impressive 40 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Groenland’s wines have won numerous accolades at the Veritas, Michelangelo and Gourmet Festival awards. Their flagship Antoinette Marie blend and Steenkamp range have placed the estate firmly in the forefront of Stellenbosch’s red wine producers. With elevated south-west facing slopes overlooking Table Bay, the terroir here is ideally suited to producing wines of depth, structure and elegance.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2019 vintage in Stellenbosch delivered a classic season for Cabernet Sauvignon, with moderate temperatures and well-timed rainfall producing grapes of excellent concentration and balance. Groenland’s Cabernet vineyards are planted on the elevated slopes of the Bottelary Hills on well-drained gravel soils, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The south-west facing aspect and cooling breezes from Table Bay ensure slow, even ripening — ideal conditions for producing structured, age-worthy Cabernet.
In the Cellar
The grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and gently destemmed before fermentation. Careful temperature control during fermentation preserved the varietal aromatics, while extended maceration extracted fine-grained tannins and deep colour. The wine was then matured in French and American oak barrels, adding layers of vanilla, spice and complexity to the concentrated fruit core. The result is a classically styled Bottelary Cabernet with the structure to age gracefully.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep garnet with ruby highlights.
Nose: Classic Cabernet aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and cedar, layered with hints of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and subtle vanilla oak.
Palate: Full-bodied and well-structured, with concentrated flavours of dark berry fruit, cassis and black pepper. The tannins are firm yet velvety, providing an elegant backbone to the rich fruit.
Finish: Long and lingering, with a satisfying interplay of fruit, oak spice and fine-grained tannins.
Food Pairing
A classic partner for a perfectly grilled fillet steak, slow-roasted leg of lamb or a rich oxtail potjie. It also pairs beautifully with mature cheddar, biltong or a hearty bobotie. For a lighter option, try it with a mushroom and truffle risotto. Serve at 16–18°C.
