The Producer
Groenland is a fourth-generation family wine estate nestled in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, one of the Cape’s most prized wine districts. The Steenkamp family has been crafting wines here for over 90 years, with Piet Steenkamp now at the helm as winemaker and farmer. The estate comprises 188 hectares, with 152 hectares under vine.
Named after Kosie and Hélène Steenkamp’s two daughters, Antoinette Marie is a wine of both heritage and heart — and one of Groenland’s most celebrated bottlings. This flagship blend has earned multiple accolades at the Veritas, Michelangelo and Gourmet Festival awards, and received a Platter’s 4-star rating for the 2020 vintage.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2020 vintage in Stellenbosch was characterised by a dry growing season that concentrated flavours beautifully across the red varietals. Groenland’s vineyards are planted on elevated south-west facing slopes in the Bottelary Hills, overlooking Table Bay. The well-drained gravel soils and Mediterranean climate — hot, dry summers with cool, wet winters — create ideal conditions for producing deeply coloured, richly structured red wines. The cooling breezes from Table Bay ensure slow, even ripening across the Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon parcels.
In the Cellar
This carefully crafted blend of 57% Merlot, 33% Shiraz and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon brings together the best qualities of each varietal. The grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with each variety vinified separately before blending. Fermentation was temperature-controlled to preserve aromatic intensity, and the wine was matured in small French and American oak barrels. The Merlot provides smoothness and plush fruit, the Shiraz contributes spice and depth, and the Cabernet Sauvignon adds firm structure and ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep, rich red with garnet highlights.
Nose: An abundance of ripe dark fruit, black pepper and berries on the nose, well blended with chocolate flavours from French oak maturation. Smoky and spicy aromas mingle with hints of vanilla and tobacco.
Palate: Full-bodied and richly flavoured, with concentrated dark berry fruit, black pepper spice and a smooth, velvety texture. The tannins are soft and well-structured, creating perfect harmony between fruit, oak and acidity.
Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, vanilla spice and a touch of smokiness.
Food Pairing
Antoinette Marie is a superb partner for a perfectly roasted rack of lamb, slow-braised beef short ribs or a rich venison pie. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheddar, a classic steak and kidney pie or a hearty Karoo lamb potjie. Serve at 16–18°C and enjoy within 5–8 years for optimal drinking.
