The Producer
False Bay Vineyards is the brainchild of Paul Boutinot, founder of the acclaimed Waterkloof Estate on the slopes of Schapenberg. An independent company within the Waterkloof family, False Bay exists to prove that real, naturally crafted wine doesn’t have to cost the earth. Every bottle is made by Cellarmaster Nadia Langenegger using grapes from mature, often old, and always naturally balanced vineyards across the Cape’s Coastal Region. Wild yeast, minimal intervention, and zero compromise — that’s the False Bay way. The range has earned seven Platter’s Good Value awards. All wines are vegan-friendly, WWF Biodiversity Champion certified, and WIETA accredited.
Vintage & Terroir
The grapes for this Syrah come primarily from two vineyards in Stellenbosch, chosen for their cooler temperatures and low yields of small, naturally balanced and concentrated berries. The maritime influence of nearby False Bay moderates summer heat, allowing the fruit to develop rich, complex flavours while retaining the peppery, savoury character that distinguishes true Syrah from the bolder Shiraz style.
In the Cellar
Production is deliberately ‘old school’ — wild yeast fermentation with a portion of whole-bunch fruit (stems and all) for added complexity and a savoury backbone. The wine is then split between stainless steel (75%) and 2nd/3rd-fill French oak 300-litre barrels (25%) for six months of maturation. This blend of tank and barrel delivers spicy, structured Syrah with real depth but no heavy oak influence. No additions other than sulphur as a preservative.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep garnet red with violet edges.
Nose: Brambly fruits, cassis, and dark cherry, with a ripe, spicy character and hints of earth and savoury, meaty aromas — definitely more Syrah than Shiraz.
Palate: Structured and well-balanced with fresh red fruit, gently spicy notes, fine tannins, and refreshing natural acidity. The partial whole-bunch fermentation adds a savoury, peppery dimension that gives the wine real personality. Rich without being heavy.
Finish: A slightly peppery, Rhône-inspired finish that lingers with dark fruit and spice.
Food Pairing
Made for a slow Sunday braai — think lamb sosaties, smoked brisket, or a rich venison stew. It’s equally at home with a mushroom and thyme pie, aged Gouda, or anything off the smoker. Serve at 16–18°C and let the pepper and spice do the talking.
