The Producer
False Bay Vineyards is the brainchild of Paul Boutinot, founder of the acclaimed Waterkloof Estate on the slopes of Schapenberg. An independent company within the Waterkloof family, False Bay exists to prove that real, naturally crafted wine doesn’t have to cost the earth. Every bottle is made by Cellarmaster Nadia Langenegger using grapes from mature, often old, and always naturally balanced vineyards across the Cape’s Coastal Region. Wild yeast, minimal intervention, and zero compromise — that’s the False Bay way. The range has earned seven Platter’s Good Value awards, while the Bush Vine Pinotage 2020 scored an impressive 93 points in a Decanter Magazine panel tasting of 142 Pinotage wines.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2023 vintage Pinotage comes from a single vineyard of unirrigated bush vines in Stellenbosch. These old, low-yielding vines dig deep into the soils, producing small, naturally concentrated berries packed with flavour. The cooler Stellenbosch temperatures ensure the grapes retain vibrant acidity while developing rich, dark fruit character — the perfect foundation for serious Pinotage.
In the Cellar
Hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with wild yeast — no commercial cultures, no shortcuts. The wine is then raised in large French oak foudre, which allows gentle micro-oxygenation and subtle oak seasoning without overwhelming the fruit. No additions other than sulphur as a preservative. Nadia’s extensive experience with Pinotage ensures the varietal’s best qualities shine through — youthful, vibrant, and genuinely expressive.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep ruby-purple with a youthful vibrancy.
Nose: Dark fruits and chocolate lead the way, with appealing blackberry, violet, sour cherry, and savoury herb notes adding complexity.
Palate: A heady mix of ripe dark fruit, rich chocolate, and plum supported by firm yet elegant tannins. The bush vine concentration delivers real depth and intensity, while the wild fermentation adds a savoury, textured dimension.
Finish: Long and satisfying with dark berry fruit, a touch of spice, and fine-grained tannins.
Food Pairing
A natural match for a classic South African braai — lamb chops, boerewors, or a sticky-glazed pork belly. It’s equally brilliant with oxtail potjie, grilled portobello mushrooms, or a hearty beef stew. Serve at 16–18°C for the full experience.
