The Producer
Diemersfontein Wine & Country Estate has been a Wellington landmark for three generations of the Sonnenberg family. While the estate is best known as the birthplace of South Africa’s original Coffee Chocolate Pinotage, the Carpe Diem Reserve range showcases a different side of Diemersfontein — serious, small-batch wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Wellington wine valley. With winemaker Francois Roode at the helm since 2003, the estate has earned Michelangelo Gold medals, Tim Atkin MW recognition, and a spot in the Platter’s 2026 “Buy Now, Drink Later” selection. The Carpe Diem Malbec is a standout — a variety that thrives in Wellington’s warm climate and is increasingly recognised as one of South Africa’s most exciting red wine stories.
Vintage & Terroir
The 2023 vintage in Wellington was warm and dry — perfect conditions for Malbec, a thick-skinned variety that loves heat and sunshine. Diemersfontein’s vineyards sit in the protected bowl formed by the Hawequa and Groenberg mountains, where decomposed granite and clay soils contribute minerality and structure. As Tim Atkin MW has noted, with rising prices in Argentina, Malbec from South Africa’s Wellington region is increasingly popular — and Diemersfontein is leading the charge. Cool evening breezes from False Bay moderate the warm daytime temperatures, preserving freshness and complexity in the fruit.
In the Cellar
The Carpe Diem Reserve Malbec receives premium winemaking treatment from start to finish. Hand-harvested grapes are carefully sorted, destemmed and cold-soaked to build colour intensity and flavour depth. Fermentation takes place in small batches with gentle extraction techniques to develop the wine’s characteristic plush, velvety texture. Maturation in French oak barrels adds layers of cedar, spice and subtle vanilla, while preserving the vibrant fruit purity that defines Wellington Malbec. The result is a wine of real elegance and concentration.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Deep, opaque purple-red with violet-tinged edges.
Nose: A decadent blend of ripe berries and dark plums, yielding to subtle liquorice, cherry tobacco and violet aromas, with hints of cedar and dark chocolate from French oak ageing.
Palate: Lush and full-bodied, with concentrated blackberry, plum and mulberry fruit, supported by lively, finely structured tannins. The mid-palate shows lovely spice complexity, while the oak influence adds a savoury, cedary dimension.
Finish: Long and persistent, with supple, palate-caressing tannins and a lingering dark fruit and spice tail.
Food Pairing
Malbec is the ultimate steak wine — pair with a flame-grilled sirloin, a peppercorn-crusted fillet, or slow-roasted lamb shoulder. It also shines alongside rich tomato-based pasta dishes, grilled aubergine, or a hearty venison potjie. For a South African touch, try it with sosaties off the braai or a rich beef biltong and blue cheese platter. Serve at 16–18°C and decant for 20 minutes.
