The Producer
Badsberg Wine Cellar sits at the foot of the Badsberg mountains in the Breedekloof Wine Valley, where they’ve been quietly making award-winning wine since 1951. Quietly, because this cellar lets the trophies do the talking — and there are a lot of them. Three-time winner of the General Smuts Trophy (SA Young Wine Show Overall Champion) in 2009, 2016 and 2020. SA Champion Chenin Blanc. SA Champion Pinotage. Absa Top 10 Pinotage. Standard Bank Top 10 Chenin Blanc. Six-time Pietman Hugo Trophy winner. Michelangelo Double Golds across multiple wines. And a Platter’s White Wine of the Year (Badslese 2009). Cellarmaster Willie Burger has been at the helm since 1998, backed by winemakers Henri Swiegers, Jaco Booysen and Cobus Kruger. Here’s the kicker: while Stellenbosch and Franschhoek estates charge R300–R500 for wines with similar accolades, Badsberg delivers the same quality at a fraction of the price. That’s not a compromise — that’s what happens when a great cellar operates without the premium postcode markup.
Vintage & Terroir
Breedekloof is Chenin country — home to one-third of South Africa’s total Chenin Blanc production — but the valley’s Chardonnay is an increasingly well-kept secret. The 2024 vintage benefited from the region’s Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers with around 800–1000mm of annual rainfall and, crucially, cool afternoon breezes funnelled through the valley by the surrounding mountain slopes. The result is Chardonnay with enough warmth for richness and enough cool air for freshness. Deep alluvial soils with excellent water retention provide the vines with steady nutrition throughout the growing season.
In the Cellar
This is sur lie Chardonnay — meaning the wine sits on its fine yeast lees after fermentation, building texture, creaminess and complexity. The 2024 sees 6 months in new French oak, a judicious touch that Christine Rudman in the Platter Guide describes as “wonderfully in tune with the citrus” — adding a lemon cream biscuit character without overwhelming the fruit. It’s a confident piece of winemaking: enough oak to add dimension, enough restraint to let the Chardonnay shine through.
Tasting Notes
Bright straw-gold in the glass. The nose opens with citrus blossom, lemon curd and a hint of toasted almond, underpinned by that signature lemon cream biscuit character from the oak. On the palate, this is generous but focused — creamy stone fruit, Meyer lemon and a subtle butterscotch richness, balanced by fresh acidity that keeps everything lively. The finish is clean, lingering and moreish.
Platter’s 4 Stars (88 Points) — Christine Rudman writes: “New French oak, 6 months, for 2024, wonderfully in tune with the citrus, gives a lemon cream biscuit underpin, allowing the fruit to shine. Back to a classic chardonnay profile, improves on 2023 (3.5 stars, 85 pts).” That’s a 3-point jump from the previous vintage — a cellar on an upward trajectory. From a producer that’s won SA Champion Chenin Blanc and the Standard Bank Top 10, this Chardonnay Sur Lie punches miles above its price point.
Food Pairing
Beautiful with grilled linefish, creamy chicken pasta, a buttery risotto or roasted butternut soup with a swirl of cream. Also superb alongside a cheese board featuring Brie, Camembert or a mild blue. For something South African, try it with a classic chicken pie or smoked snoek pâté on fresh bread. Serve at 10–12 °C. Drinking brilliantly now — no need to wait, just enjoy.
