The Producer
Alvi’s Drift is a family-owned estate in the Scherpenheuwel ward of Worcester, nestled in the Breede River Valley. Founded in 1928 by patriarch Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, the estate is now run by his grandson Alvi — a medical doctor who returned from abroad to follow his passion. With winemakers Henk Swart and Linley Schultz, and Cape Wine Master Junel van der Merwe, this team is one of the most decorated in the country. Alvi’s Drift holds the NWC Vineyard Consistency Award — ranked South Africa’s number one estate with 62 winning wines over 15 years.
Vintage & Terroir
The Brut Nature Cap Classique is rooted in the ancient limestone soils of the Breede River Valley, with Pinot Noir from north-facing slopes in black slate soils and Chardonnay adding finesse and citrus lift. Zero Dosage means no sugar is added after disgorgement — what you taste is pure wine, pure terroir, and pure skill. Only the best base wines can carry a Brut Nature designation, making this the ultimate expression of Alvi’s Drift’s sparkling programme.
In the Cellar
Crafted using the traditional method (Méthode Cap Classique), the grapes are whole-bunch pressed for a soft, refined base wine. Secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle, followed by extended lees ageing before disgorgement with zero dosage — no added sugar whatsoever. This uncompromising approach demands exceptional fruit quality and delivers a sparkling wine of striking purity, precision, and bone-dry elegance.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Pale gold with a fine, persistent mousse and razor-sharp bead.
Nose: Precise aromas of green apple, citrus zest, and toasted almond with a chalky, mineral undertone.
Palate: Bone-dry and razor-sharp, with crystalline acidity framing flavours of Granny Smith apple, lemon pith, and brioche. The mousse is fine and persistent, the texture taut and elegant. This is Cap Classique at its purest — no sugar to hide behind.
Finish: Long, dry, and mineral, with a saline, chalky close that demands another sip.
Food Pairing
The bone-dry character makes this a perfect match for briny oysters, sashimi-grade tuna, or a delicate ceviche. It also pairs brilliantly with aged Parmesan, tempura prawns, or a classic smoked trout mousse. Serve well chilled at 4–6°C.
